Al-Insan

الانسان

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

1

هَلْ أَتَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْإِنسَـٰنِ حِينٌ مِّنَ ٱلدَّهْرِ لَمْ يَكُن شَيْـًٔا مَّذْكُورًا

Has there [not] come upon man a period of time when he was not a thing [even] mentioned?

Hal ataa 'alal insaani heenum minad dahri lam yakun shai'am mazkooraa

Interpretation

A long period of time has passed over man when he was non-existent and there was no mention of him.

إِنَّا خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ أَمْشَاجٍ نَّبْتَلِيهِ فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ سَمِيعًۢا بَصِيرًا

Indeed, We created man from a sperm-drop mixture that We may try him; and We made him hearing and seeing.

Innaa khalaqnal insaana min nutfatin amshaajin nabta leehi faja'alnaahu samee'am baseeraa

Interpretation

I created man from a drop that was a mixture of the liquid of a man and a woman, to test him with the impositions I placed on him. I made him hearing and seeing to carry out the laws I imposed on him.

إِنَّا هَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلسَّبِيلَ إِمَّا شَاكِرًا وَإِمَّا كَفُورًا

Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful.

Innaa hadainaahus sabeela immaa shaakiranw wa immaa kafoora

Interpretation

I showed him, through the tongues of My messengers, the path of guidance and by that the path of misguidance became clear to him. Thereafter he is either guided to the straight path and becomes a believing servant that is thankful to Allah, or he is misled from it and becomes a disbelieving servant who rejects Allah’s signs.

إِنَّآ أَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ سَلَـٰسِلَا۟ وَأَغْلَـٰلًا وَسَعِيرًا

Indeed, We have prepared for the disbelievers chains and shackles and a blaze.

Innaaa a'tadnaa lilkaa fireena salaasila wa aghlaalanw wa sa'eeraa

After Allah mentioned the two types, those who are guided and those astray, he mentioned the reward of each by saying: I have prepared for those who reject Allah and His messengers, chains by which they will be dragged into the fire, and iron collars that will be tied around their necks, and a blazing fire.

5

إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ يَشْرَبُونَ مِن كَأْسٍ كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا كَافُورًا

Indeed, the righteous will drink from a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of Kāfūr,

innal abraara yashra boona min kaasin kaana mizaa juhaa kaafooraa

Interpretation

The believers who follow Allah will drink on the day of judgment from a filled cup of wine mixed with camphor because of its pleasant fragrance.

6

عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا عِبَادُ ٱللَّهِ يُفَجِّرُونَهَا تَفْجِيرًا

A spring of which the [righteous] servants of Allāh will drink; they will make it gush forth in force [and abundance].

'Aynany yashrabu bihaa 'ibaadul laahi yafajjiroonahaa tafjeeraa

Interpretation

This drink that has been prepared for the people of obedience will be from a easily palatable, abundantly flowing spring which will not dry out. The servants of Allah will drink to their fill from it, and be able to cause it to flow and run wherever they wish.

7

يُوفُونَ بِٱلنَّذْرِ وَيَخَافُونَ يَوْمًا كَانَ شَرُّهُۥ مُسْتَطِيرًا

They [are those who] fulfill [their] vows and fear a Day whose evil will be widespread.

Interpretation

The attributes of the servants who will drink from it, are that they fulfil the acts of obedience to Allah they have imposed upon themselves, and they fear a day of widespread calamity: The Day of Judgement.

8

وَيُطْعِمُونَ ٱلطَّعَامَ عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِۦ مِسْكِينًا وَيَتِيمًا وَأَسِيرًا

And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive,

Wa yut''imoonat ta'aama 'alaa hubbihee miskeenanw wa yatemanw wa aseeraa

They also feed food, despite being in the state of loving food due to being needy and desirous of it. They feed it to the poor, orphans and captives.

9

إِنَّمَا نُطْعِمُكُمْ لِوَجْهِ ٱللَّهِ لَا نُرِيدُ مِنكُمْ جَزَآءً وَلَا شُكُورًا

[Saying], "We feed you only for the face [i.e., approval] of Allāh. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.

Innaamaa nut'imukum li wajhil laahi laa nureedu minkum jazaaa'anw wa laa shukooraa

Interpretation

They conceal within themselves that they only feed them for the pleasure of Allah; not intending to receive any recompense from those whom they have fed, nor any praise.

10

إِنَّا نَخَافُ مِن رَّبِّنَا يَوْمًا عَبُوسًا قَمْطَرِيرًا

Indeed, We fear from our Lord a Day austere and distressful."

Innaa nakhaafu mir Rabbinna Yawman 'aboosan qamtareeraa

11

فَوَقَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ شَرَّ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمِ وَلَقَّىٰهُمْ نَضْرَةً وَسُرُورًا

So Allāh will protect them from the evil of that Day and give them radiance and happiness

Fa waqaahumul laahu sharra zaalikal yawmi wa laqqaahum nadratanw wa surooraa

12

وَجَزَىٰهُم بِمَا صَبَرُوا۟ جَنَّةً وَحَرِيرًا

And will reward them for what they patiently endured [with] a garden [in Paradise] and silk [garments].

Wa jazaahum bimaa sabaroo janatanw wa hareeraa

13

مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ فِيهَا عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ ۖ لَا يَرَوْنَ فِيهَا شَمْسًا وَلَا زَمْهَرِيرًا

[They will be] reclining therein on adorned couches. They will not see therein any [burning] sun or [freezing] cold.

They will be reclining in it on decorated couches. They will not see in this Paradise a sun to be inconvenienced by its rays, nor will they experience extreme cold; rather they will be in constant shade, without extreme heat or cold.

14

وَدَانِيَةً عَلَيْهِمْ ظِلَـٰلُهَا وَذُلِّلَتْ قُطُوفُهَا تَذْلِيلًا

And near above them are its shades, and its [fruit] to be picked will be lowered in compliance.

Wa daaniyatan 'alaihim zilaaluhaa wa zullilat qutoofu haa tazleela

15

وَيُطَافُ عَلَيْهِم بِـَٔانِيَةٍ مِّن فِضَّةٍ وَأَكْوَابٍ كَانَتْ قَوَارِيرَا۠

And there will be circulated among them vessels of silver and cups having been [created] clear [as glass],

Wa yutaafu 'alaihim bi aaniyatim min fiddatinw wa akwaabin kaanat qawaareeraa

16

قَوَارِيرَا۟ مِن فِضَّةٍ قَدَّرُوهَا تَقْدِيرًا

Clear glasses [made] from silver of which they have determined the measure.

Qawaareera min fiddatin qaddaroohaa taqdeeraa

17

وَيُسْقَوْنَ فِيهَا كَأْسًا كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا زَنجَبِيلًا

And they will be given to drink a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of ginger

Wa yusawna feehaa kaasan kaana mizaajuhaa zanjabeelaa

18

عَيْنًا فِيهَا تُسَمَّىٰ سَلْسَبِيلًا

[From] a fountain within it [i.e., Paradise] named Salsabeel.

'Aynan feeha tusammaa salsabeelaa

19

۞ وَيَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ إِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ حَسِبْتَهُمْ لُؤْلُؤًا مَّنثُورًا

There will circulate among them young boys made eternal. When you see them, you would think them [as beautiful as] scattered pearls.

Wa yatoofu 'alaihim wildaanum mukhalladoona izaa ra aytahum hasibtahum lu'lu 'am mansoora

20

وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ ثَمَّ رَأَيْتَ نَعِيمًا وَمُلْكًا كَبِيرًا

And when you look there [in Paradise], you will see pleasure and great dominion.

21

عَـٰلِيَهُمْ ثِيَابُ سُندُسٍ خُضْرٌ وَإِسْتَبْرَقٌ ۖ وَحُلُّوٓا۟ أَسَاوِرَ مِن فِضَّةٍ وَسَقَىٰهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ شَرَابًا طَهُورًا

Upon them [i.e., the inhabitants] will be green garments of fine silk and brocade. And they will be adorned with bracelets of silver, and their Lord will give them a purifying drink.

'Aaliyahum siyaabu sundusin khudrunw wa istabraq, wa hullooo asaawira min fiddatinw wa saqaahum Rabbuhum sharaaban tahooraa

Interpretation

Magnificent green clothes will adorn their upper bodies, made of fine silk and silk brocade. They will also be made to wear silver bracelets, and Allah will give them to drink, a drink free of any spoiling.

22

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا كَانَ لَكُمْ جَزَآءً وَكَانَ سَعْيُكُم مَّشْكُورًا

[And it will be said], "Indeed, this is for you a reward, and your effort has been appreciated."

Innaa haazaa kaana lakum jazz 'anw wa kaana sa'yukum mashkooraa

23

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ تَنزِيلًا

Indeed, it is We who have sent down to you, [O Muḥammad], the Qur’ān progressively.

Innaa nahnu nazzalnaa 'alaikal quraana tanzeelaa

24

فَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تُطِعْ مِنْهُمْ ءَاثِمًا أَوْ كَفُورًا

So be patient for the decision of your Lord and do not obey from among them a sinner or ungrateful [disbeliever].

Fasbir lihukmi Rabbika wa laa tuti' minhum aasiman aw kafooraa

Interpretation

So be patient over what Allah decrees or legislates, and do not follow the sinner in the sin he calls towards, nor the disbeliever in the disbelief he invites towards.

25

وَٱذْكُرِ ٱسْمَ رَبِّكَ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا

And mention the name of your Lord [in prayer] morning and evening

Wazkuris ma Rabbika bukratanw wa aseelaa

26

وَمِنَ ٱلَّيْلِ فَٱسْجُدْ لَهُۥ وَسَبِّحْهُ لَيْلًا طَوِيلًا

And during the night prostrate to Him and exalt [i.e., praise] Him a long [part of the] night.

Wa minal laili fasjud lahoo wa sabbihhu lailan taweelaa

27

إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ يُحِبُّونَ ٱلْعَاجِلَةَ وَيَذَرُونَ وَرَآءَهُمْ يَوْمًا ثَقِيلًا

Indeed, these [disbelievers] love the immediate and leave behind them a grave Day.

Inna haaa'ulaa'i yuhibboona 'aajilata wa yazaroona waraaa'ahum yawman saqeelaa

Indeed, these idolaters love the worldly life and are greedy for it, leaving behind them the Day of Judgement which is a burdensome day due to the difficulties and tests in it.

28

نَّحْنُ خَلَقْنَـٰهُمْ وَشَدَدْنَآ أَسْرَهُمْ ۖ وَإِذَا شِئْنَا بَدَّلْنَآ أَمْثَـٰلَهُمْ تَبْدِيلًا

We have created them and strengthened their forms, and when We will, We can change their likenesses with [complete] alteration.

Nahnu khalaqnaahum wa shadadnaaa asrahum wa izaa shi'naa baddalnaaa amsaala hum tabdeelaa

29

إِنَّ هَـٰذِهِۦ تَذْكِرَةٌ ۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِيلًا

Indeed, this is a reminder, so he who wills may take to his Lord a way.

Inna haazihee tazkiratun fa man shaaa'at takhaza ilaa rabbihee sabeela

30

وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا

And you do not will except that Allāh wills. Indeed, Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.

You do not wish to take the path to the pleasure of Allah except that Allah also wishes that from you, because the matter is fully in His control. Indeed, Allah knows the requirements of His servants and what they do not require; He is wise in His creation, decree and legislation.

31

يُدْخِلُ مَن يَشَآءُ فِى رَحْمَتِهِۦ ۚ وَٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ أَعَدَّ لَهُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًۢا

He admits whom He wills into His mercy; but the wrongdoers - He has prepared for them a painful punishment.

Yudkhilu mai yashaaa'u fee rahmatih; wazzaalimeena a'adda lahum 'azaaban aleemaa

Interpretation

He enters whichever of His servants He wishes into His mercy, granting them the ability to bring faith and do good deeds. He has also prepared for those who oppress themselves by disbelieving and committing sins, a painful punishment in the afterlife: the punishment of the hellfire.
