Surah 90 · 20 verses
Al-Balad
البلد
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ
I swear by this city [i.e., Makkah]
Laaa uqsimu bihaazal balad

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ
And you, [O Muḥammad], are free of restriction in this city

O Messenger! It is permissible for you to do whatever you wish on the Day of the Conquest of Makkah, from capital punishment to those whom are deserving of it, to taking captive whomsoever deserves it.

وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ
And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],
Wa waalidinw wa maa walad

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ
We have certainly created man into hardship.

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا
He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."

Does he think that no one has seen him?

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ
Have We not made for him two eyes?

وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ

Falaq tahamal-'aqabah

And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ
It is the freeing of a slave

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ
And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.
Summa kaana minal lazeena aamanoo wa tawaasaw bissabri wa tawaasaw bilmarhamah

Then he is required to be from those who have faith in Allah and advise each other to remain steadfast on act of obedience and refraining from sins, and bearing patience over difficulties, together with advising one another to show mercy to the servants of Allah.

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ
Those are the companions of the right.

But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.
Wallazeena kafaroo bi aayaatinaa hum as-haabul Mash'amah

As for those who disbelieve in My verses that were revealed to My Messenger, they are the people of the left.

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ
Over them will be fire closed in.
Alaihim naarum mu'sadah
