Qibla
The Kaaba — the direction of prayer
The Kaaba is a cubic structure in Mecca, in the courtyard of the Sacred Mosque. Muslims everywhere turn toward it during prayer — this direction is called the Qibla.

Tawaf
A motion that never stops
The golden lights around are pilgrims in tawaf: seven circuits counter-clockwise. This motion never ceases, day or night, year after year — a living axis around which the praying world turns.
Kiswah & hizam
Black silk and golden script
The cube is draped in the kiswah — a covering of black silk, made anew every year. Along its upper third runs the hizam: a band embroidered in gold with verses of the Quran. Look closely: the camera is passing right by it.
The eastern corner
The Black Stone and the Mizab
At the eastern corner, set in a silver frame, is al-Hajar al-Aswad, the Black Stone: pilgrims begin and end every circuit of tawaf at it. Tradition holds it was brought to Ibrahim ﷺ by the angel Jibril. Science has no verdict on its nature — a “meteorite” hypothesis has been voiced, but the stone has never been studied in a laboratory. And on the roof's edge gleams the Mizab ar-Rahmah — the golden spout that carries rainwater off the Kaaba's roof.
Sitara
The golden door
From the stone the camera descends to the sitara — the embroidered curtain above the Kaaba's door. The door itself is pure gold, raised above the ground; this very stretch, from the Black Stone past the door, is what pilgrims walk each day. Once a year the door is opened for the washing of the Kaaba. The pilgrim's road is told on the Hajj page.

A cutaway: what is inside the Kaaba
The kiswah “opens” to reveal the interior. It is almost empty inside: three columns in a row hold the roof, lamps gifted by caliphs hang from a crossbeam. The lower walls are white marble, the upper part green silk with golden verses; the ceiling is dark wood. In a corner — a gilded door with a staircase to the roof, and a small table for fragrant oils (per accounts of those who have been inside).

Tasbih — remembrance of Allah
After prayer it is traditional to say: 33 times «SubhanAllah», 33 — «Alhamdulillah», and 34 — «Allahu akbar». A misbaha (a string of beads) helps not to lose count. Tap the bead — it counts.
