Surah 96 · 19 verses

Al-'Alaq

العلق

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

1

ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ

Recite in the name of your Lord who created

Iqra bismi rab bikal lazee khalaq

Interpretation

O Messenger! Read what Allah reveals to you, starting with the name of your Lord who created the creation.

2

خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ

Created man from a clinging substance.

3

ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ

Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous -

Iqra wa rab bukal akram

4

ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَمِ

Who taught by the pen

Al lazee 'allama bil qalam

5

عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ

Taught man that which he knew not.

6

كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ لَيَطْغَىٰٓ

No! [But] indeed, man transgresses

7

أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ

Because he sees himself self-sufficient.

8

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ

Indeed, to your Lord is the return.

9

أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يَنْهَىٰ

Have you seen the one who forbids

Have you seen anything more shocking than the matter of Abu Jahl, who prevented.

10

عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ

A servant when he prays?

'Abdan iza sallaa

He prevented My servant Muhammad (peace be upon him) when he performed prayer near the Ka‘bah.

11

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ

Have you seen if he is upon guidance

12

أَوْ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ

Or enjoins righteousness?

Au amara bit taqwaa

13

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ

Have you seen if he denies and turns away -

14

أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ

Does he not know that Allāh sees?

Alam y'alam bi-an nal lahaa yaraa

15

كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ

No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock

Kalla la illam yantahi la nasfa'am bin nasiyah

It is not as this ignorant person imagines; if he does not stop causing harm to My servant and rejecting him, I will definitely seize him and drag him violently by the top of his head, towards the hellfire.

16

نَاصِيَةٍ كَـٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ

A lying, sinning forelock.

Nasiyatin kazi batin khaatiyah

The owner of that forehead is a liar in speech and erroneous in action.

17

فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُۥ

Then let him call his associates;

Fal yad'u naadiyah

So when he is seized by his forehead towards the hellfire, let him call out to his companions and associates asking for their help to save him from the punishment.

18

سَنَدْعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ

We will call the angels of Hell.

Interpretation

I will call upon the gatekeepers of hell: the fierce angels who do not disobey My command when I command them, and do whatever they are commanded to do. It will then be seen which of the two parties are stronger and more capable.

19

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَٱسْجُدْ وَٱقْتَرِب ۩

No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allāh].

Interpretation

It is not as this oppressor thinks: that he can cause any harm to you. So do not follow him in command or prohibition; rather, prostrate to Allah and draw closer to Him through acts of obedience, because that is how you can draw closer to Him.
