Corpus sources and authenticity notes
Every hadith has a stable number and addressable verbatim fragments from an-Nawawi's edition. Underlying collection numbers and grades appear only where that edition states them.
- Sahih al-Bukhari — The most authentic collection; Imam al-Bukhari (9th c.) with a very strict scrutiny of narrators.
- Sahih Muslim — Second in authenticity; together with al-Bukhari known as the «two Sahihs».
- Sunan at-Tirmidhi — Collection of Imam at-Tirmidhi; often states the grade of a hadith (hasan/sahih).
- Sunan an-Nasa'i — Collection of Imam an-Nasa'i; especially strict on the reliability of narrators.
- Sunan Abu Dawud — Collection of Abu Dawud; focused on hadith of legal content.
- Sunan Ibn Majah — The sixth of the «six books» (al-Kutub as-Sittah).
- ad-Daraqutni, al-Bayhaqi — Later collections from which a few hadith in this selection are taken.
Grades of authenticity
- sahih — authentic — a reliable, unbroken chain of narrators
- hasan — good — a little weaker, but acceptable
- hasan sahih — reliable through several routes of transmission at once
